Home Design Ideas - Split the Garage!

At Larson Brenner Architects I am currently working a client on a new home design to be constructed in Rochester, MN.  Here we have run into a very common dilemma.  What to do with 3 1/2 cars worth of garage?

If you put all of that garage to the side of the house you get one very wide plan.  If you put all of that garage forward of the house you get one very deep plan.  Many lots cannot accommodate either one of those plan arrangements.  So what I have proposed to do here is to split the garages into two separate structures.  The main two car garage is directly connected to the house via the mudroom zone.  The additional 1 1/2 car garage is placed on the opposite side of the lot; resulting in a nifty little entry court.  See sketches below.

Here you can see a birds eye view of the layout.  Notice the roof between the garage and house is low.  This helps to reduce the mass of the house.  Pulling the garages a bit forward of the front porch creates a nifty little courtyard.

    view from street

    view approaching courtyard

    nice little composition

So when you develop your next house plan - please think about the impact of that garage and look for creative solutions.

Minimalist House Plan Design by Craftsman

Simple and minimalist design house plans directly from the many houses have been built.

This has been one of the most popular of the Craftsman home design and shown here has been slightly modified from the plan first, modifications and improvements that have been suggested by different people who have built homes, so they are all very valuable as a result of practical experience. Although the picture shows the patch walls and foundations of field stone, the design lends itself quite as easily to a wall of brick or stone, or even for shingles or clapboards, if a wooden house as desired.

Outside the kitchen at the back is only recommended if the house built in this country, because in that city would not be necessary. In such a farmhouse outside the kitchen because it affords the easiest place for outdoor work such as laundry and ironing, canning, preserving and other tasks much less tedious if done in the open. The position of the chimney at the rear of the house to allow the stove to be placed on the porch he was to use it. This house was designed so that the kitchen in the vicinity may be added to or removed, as desired, without making any difference to the overall plan. Plan of the lower story shows the composition of ordinary open Craftsman houses. The entrance opens into the small entries are filtered from the living room by portieres weight, so no draft from the front door is felt on the inside.

Home design interior: Outside the living room wall is a fireplace and bookshelves settings, as shown in the picture. A large table was placed in the middle, settle for it by coming back and facing the fire.

Home Design Ideas

When you move into a new home, your first task is to furnish it. The furniture that you select is based upon your tastes and personality. Most people choose to create design themes for all of their rooms. After you have spent hours of your precious time choosing your home furnishings and accent décor pieces, you might think that you are done. Take a look around your home. Especially if it is a new home, the only lighting comes from ceiling lights. While these brighten a room, they do nothing for the mood. In order to really make your house a home, you have to consider home lighting design as well as furniture design. Your choices for home design lighting will determine the overall tone and theme of a room just as much as, if not more, than the decorating pieces like wall art and vases.

While you are deciding on your home lighting design fixtures, you will probably want to keep your ceiling lights that are included in your home. After all, they are the most effective way of lighting the most space with the fewest lights. You might want to change the style, though. Many new homes are built with lofted ceilings, and this makes lights embedded in the ceiling impractical since they are too high to be effective. Instead of a ceiling lights that is flush, you might like to hang a pendant lighting fixture. These bring the light source down from the ceiling, and they also draw the eye upward. With your guests looking upward at your pendant light, you can use the wall space on the upper level that would typically be unused. This is an ideal spot for large pictures and pieces of art. Often times, pendant lighting fixtures are no more difficult to install than a ceiling fan. For a more elegant take on pendant lighting, one of the most popular options are chandeliers and decorative wall sconces. These make luxurious additions to dining rooms, foyers or living rooms. Do not forget that the style of chandelier that you choose will go a long way to determining your home lighting design theme.

After you have your home lighting design set for the lights which are directed down into the room, now you have the option of installing accent lights in various places in and around your home. These can have mainly practical uses such as under cabinet or recessed lighting, or they could be used to highlight your décor accent pieces. For such a purpose, there are many choices when you are designing home lighting. Even a child's crayon drawing or a family photograph can be turned into a work of art by incorporating picture lights into the frame. You can elevate your knick knacks and collectibles on a shelf with shelf and Phantom display lighting. To bring out a corner of a room, or just to create a dramatic flair with uplights, track lights are a good choice. For these we have track lighting kits that include everything you need to install them.

The Impact of Fall Colors in Interior Decorating

I would never recommend you paint interior walls just to decorate for a season, but so many of our favorite colors come in fall anyway. You can safely paint almost any room in warm tones and it works all year round. Paint a single wall in orange or another bright fall color and leave the rest white for strong contrast.

Bold is Beautiful - Go for Orange & White!

Orange is a bold color, but look at the contrast you get when you paint just a single wall in a room in a very bold primary color and leave the rest of the room white? It is striking and, again, will work well all year. Other ‘bold’ fall colors that work well as wall paint colors include cinnamon, cranberry and burgundy.

    Think contrast!

Blend or contrast colors, generally using no more than two or three colors in a room, a cranberry wall with white chair rail looks great but four cranberry walls and no trim will seem too stark.

Though, you can get away with a little color addition to greatly affect the overall look of a room. So, you can add red, yellow or orange to a room that otherwise has none of these colors, creating a central point in one area or splashing the accent color in several places throughout the room.
