Small Kitchen Design

It might seem that no challenge is quite as difficult as reworking a small kitchen space space. It is easy to feel as though you have little or few options when working with such a tiny area. Even if you don't have a very big budget or have to deal with building restrictions, there are still many changes you can make in your kitchen to transform it into something more functional.

    Storage
Counter space is always an issue in any kitchen, no matter what the size. In a small kitchen, space, and therefore counter space, is limited. Make the most of what you have by putting in as many cabinets as possible. This will help to get things, like dishes and appliances you use occasionally off the counter, which will give you more space. Installing deeper counters can also help relieve the battle between work space and appliance space on your counter.
Additionally, you may want to put in deep cabinets that will be able to store more. To make your kitchen more practical, organize your cabinets so that their contents are related to the area of the kitchen they are located in. Items like plates and glasses should be stored near the dishwasher while pots should be stored in cabinets by the stove.
    Built-in Appliances
Small Kitchen DesignA big cause of clutter is often the result of our appliances. When your counter space is limited, having a coffee maker, waffle iron, microwave and toaster taken up what little space there is can just make you feel cramped and crowded. Whenever you can, look to have built-in appliances put in, like a built-in microwave.
For other items that you don't necessarily use that often, install some sliding shelves. Thanks to the sliding action of the shelf, it is easy to quickly access as well as hide small appliances.
    Pantry
Just because you don't have the space for a pantry closet doesn't mean you can't have a pantry. If you have an area that is at least two feet wide and 5 1/2 feet tall, then you can pick yourself up a rollout pantry. If you don't even have that much space to spare, then reassess how you are using a closet that is located outside of your kitchen. You may just be able to make space in another closet for your kitchen storage needs.
    Good Lighting
Don’t forget that mirrors and lights can create illusions. By using the proper type of lighting, you can easily make your kitchen appear larger and even more comfortable. Consider using halogen lights or even lighting under your counter.
    A Large Kitchen Sink
And always remember, your sink does not have to be in proportion to your kitchen. Large sinks are much more practical than small sinks, especially when it comes to cleaning the pots and pans. Large sinks can also be used as a utility sink for those living in an apartment or a small house.

KITCHEN DECORATING IDEAS FOR 2010

Are you thinking of redecorating your kitchen for the new year? Listed below are some great kitchen decorating ideas you can use for 2010 to bring life to the room you spend the most time in:

Use bright bold colors - Kitchens are the one place where you can use bright reds, greens, yellows, and blues and get away with it. If you try to use those colors for a dining or living area, they probably will not look good at all. But if you want your kitchen to stand out and make a bold statement, using bright colors is the way to do it. You can't do this in every kitchen but if yours is one that already has a whimsical look, adding colors can be a great idea.
Centerpieces decor, Minimalist Design, Home Design, Decoration, Modern Furniture, Staircase Design
The clean and neat kitchen - Some kitchens are a mess, with the refrigerator full of magnets, things hung all over the walls, and the counter tops packed with utensils. This kind of a hectic kitchen is not for everyone and you might prefer one that has more elegance and style. If you want a kitchen that you can bring anyone to and not be embarrassed, the clean and neat kitchen is for you. Minimal things on the walls, the counter tops should be clean, and everything should be put away in it's proper spot: which is in a cupboard!

Old style vintage kitchen - Do you remember hanging out in your Grandmother's kitchen. Those were the good old days when a kitchen had character and it didn't have all sorts of high tech gadgets. If you want your own vintage kitchen, think about doing away with all the things that look modern and replacing them with old school ones instead. For instance, you could add something like a mortar and pestle set. Simplicity should be the theme for this kind of kitchen.

Kitchen for chefs - If you like the clean white look of the kind of restaurant kitchen you see in the movies, you can try to model yours accordingly. This kind of kitchen accentuates the basics and when you walk in, it is clear this kitchen is for cooking! Usually there is a lot of stainless steel used for the cabinets, sinks, andstove tops and this is one of the more unique kitchen design ideas

Restaurant style kitchen - At some restaurants, you can get aglimpse of part of even all of the kitchen. This is because it is stylishly decorated and it serves as part of the atmosphere of the restaurant. If you have an open kitchen that blends in with your dining room or eating area, you can try to duplicate this look. Think more about what things look like than how well they work because style is the most important aspect of this kitchen.

The casual kitchen - This is the kitchen that is the favorite room in the house where everyone ends up spending a lot of time. Comfort is the key here as all the chairs and stools must be a pleasure to sit on. The kitchen colors must be soft on the eyes and you need to have it big enough for people to congregate. This type of kitchen is designed as the gathering spot both for guests when you have parties and for everyday use.

Majestic Private Home in UK with a Highly Modern Feel

We recently received this amazing interior design project from Sybarite, an architectural and design studio founded in 2002. Here are some extracts from the press release they sent us:  “This complete refurbishment of a four floor / four bedroom Victorian townhouse in West London’s Brackenbury Village required  sensitivity. The brief was to completely gut this wreck of a house
    Majestic
An important element of the brief for this area was to maximise storage so that the whole family could easily share this space without it becoming too cluttered. Deep, floor to ceiling lacquered cupboards run along one whole wall, providing ample space to pack away toys and games so the room can be easily transformed from child’s playroom to relaxed entertaining area for grownups.”

Decorate Your Balcony For The Summer

Pool-party season is around the corner and everyone with a backyard is gearing up for the festivities.  Now just because you live in an apartment building, doesn’t mean you can’t turn your balcony space into an area that’s style and social friendly!
Here are a few tips to get you started..
    •    Remember to ask the management about weight limits or any regulations they have about redecorating the balcony.  You have to know these things if you’re going to be successful in turning your “outdoors” into a safe and inviting area.
    •    Take careful measurements so that you don’t have to waste time or money returning things that don’t fit correctly.
    •    Take into consideration what the weather might bring:  extreme sun exposure or harsh rain.  Look into some kind of protection; such as an awning or a large umbrella or parasol.
    •    Draw out some sketches of potential design ideas so that you can truly see what looks  best in your space.
    •    Go online to look at furniture, accent pieces, or flooring since it saves time.
    •    Make sure your space is inviting to others.  Stay away from overly fancy items because you want people to feel at home.
    •    Don’t clutter the space.  It should be free-flowing and easy to move around on.
    •    Adding plants or a small fountain always adds to creating a more soothing and relaxed ambiance.
Remember, just because you don’t have an enormous backyard, doesn’t mean you can’t invite your friends over this summer!  With these tips, you can transform your balcony into a small oasis that’s meant to calm and relax it’s guests.

Small One Room Apartment Interior Design Inspiration

Last week I was in Bucharest to meet a few people that I knew from the internet. We spoke for a long time online but we never saw each other in real life, and I’ve decided that right now I could go to visit Bucharest and meet a few of my “digital friends“. Now to avoid paying between 50 - 100 euro/night to stay at a hotel a good friend of mine ( Adi ) took me to his little one room apartment, and how I have a blog about architectureinterior design, furniture, etc …I’ve decided to take some pictures, because I really liked how Adi made that small place look really good. Now let’s take a look at this small one room apartment, that is a great example of how you can make a small apartment look really good.
At night these red lights make a very romantic and calming atmosphere.

Design tips for smaller bathrooms

If you have a smaller area designated for bathroom use, you will have to make some adjustments in order to make proper use of this space.Start by figuring out what things you need to have in your bathroom. For instance, if you aren’t planning to spend a lot of time in your bathroom, you can install just the main necessary equipments and items in order to feel comfortable. Another important factor is the wise choice of color because a pastel and light color is likely to make your bathroom look larger. The lighter shades are also more welcoming.

Even if your bathroom is small, you can still make it look quite elegant by using the right visual accents. You should use subtle wallpapers that can make your bathroom look larger. Floor coloring is another important issue and you should go for neutral or light colors in order to make the space look roomier. Light shades of blues, tans or grays are the best choices for a small bathroom because they can make it look more airy and sophisticated.
A small bathroom space should be lighted up with additional lights. If you notice that there is no space for such additional lights in your bathroom, you should go for the bulbs that provide a high wattage. These bulbs will make your bathroom very inviting and brighter. Don’t worry about decorating your bathroom either because even a smaller place is likely to be well decorated once you follow the right steps.
Start by using only a few mirrors because overdoing with mirrors is likely to provide your bathroom with unwanted effects. Keep in mind that using too many mirrors in a small bathroom will emphasize only the corners of its space. So, you should be careful when it comes to selecting the places where you want to have mirrors installed. For instance, installing the mirrors opposite to each other is not a wise idea. Limit the mirrors in order not to show the real size of your bathroom.
You should cleat out the bathroom walls in order to create the illusion of a larger space. You should also keep your things floating. For instance, you might install floating cupboards and a wall mounted sink in order to prevent these items from taking too much from the floor space. You can utilize the bathroom floor for other useful things such as putting a plant or a trash can. Using the bathroom door is another useful tip that will help you save some space. The door is more useful and helpful than acting as a simple exit and entrance.  For instance, you can use it in order to install some clothes or towel hangers because this will conserve extra precious space. You will also be left with more space to use for the bathroom design you plan to have.
You might consider using the collapsible shower screens. Such shower screens come in various types such as sliding or foldable ones. You can also use curtains in order to get the division you want. Allowing natural light inside your bathroom is another wise thing for you to do because having a window installed in this space will make it look more spacious. However, you must make sure that the window is not too big because, if this is the case, you will defeat the initial purpose of trying to conserve wall space. Now that you know all these tips, you are truly ready to start designing your small bathroom .

7 Home Decoration Secrets

7 Home Decoration SecretsWe always want our homes to be perfect. That is understandable since our home is our abode, our personal sanctuary, the place we look forward to go to after a whole day of stressful work. This is why, one of the most important things a homeowner has to do is to decorate his or her home in such a way that it will be a nice and relaxing escape. This article reveals top 10 home decoration secrets that you surely would want to know.

    7 Home Decoration Secrets
    1. Visualizing is the key

Do not simply make an exact replica of the living room you found on the home interior magazine. Visualize on your own how you want your home to look like, how you want home decors like your wall plaques and paintings to be hung on the wall. Visualization of each room will make it easier for you to do your planning and decoration.

    7 Home Decoration Secrets
    2. Start with a focal point

Any veteran interior designer knows how important it is to start with a focal point in any room so that other home décor items will flow easily around it. It is always a great idea to select an item that gives a big impact like the fireplace, a piano or a sofa.

    7 Home Decoration Secrets
    3. Colors have psychological effect

Colors are important design elements not only because it determines the ambience and feel of the room, and gives the illusion of space but also because they have psychological effects on people.

For example, blue, which is the least appetizing color is not a good shade to paint in your dining area or kitchen. Meanwhile, light and pastel colors, which can relax the mind, are a good idea for the living room. Make sure that the colors you choose complement well with each other.

    7 Home Decoration Secrets
    4. A theme makes it easier to achieve unity and harmony

A décor theme not only makes home decoration a lot easier but is also important because it reflects the homeowner’s personal taste and style. Your theme can be classic, modern, nautical, tropical, European, Asian or whatever you can think of.

Buy furniture and home accessories that match the theme that you have chosen. For example, if the theme of your home is contemporary, modern metal wall plaques would be a great addition while if you have a coastal theme, you might as well go for nautical wall art.

    7 Home Decoration Secrets
    5. Clutter can ruin even the nicest home decoration

Get rid of everything that you do not need or hardly ever use and neatly store them in the storage room. Even if you have the most expensive or most gorgeous home decor, all these are useless if your room is filled with clutter.

    7 Home Decoration Secrets
    6. Lighting is just as important as furniture

Lighting is important because of two things. First, it illuminates the room and allows people to do the things they need to do. Second, it creates an ambience and feel of the room. Because of this, you need to choose the proper kind of lighting, which will make you achieve both objectives. Lamp and fluorescent are great for general and task lighting while candles and smaller lamps are ideal for accent lighting.

    7 Home Decoration Secrets
    7. Strive to achieve a balance between form and function

Form is just as important as function and because of that, it is necessary to achieve a balance between the two when buying furniture or decorating your home. To put it simply, you must be able to decorate your home in such a way that it will be both practical and beautiful

We all know that home decoration is not as easy as we want it to be. However, it is also true that we do not need a doctorate degree on interior decoration to get the job done right. With a dash of creativity, resourcefulness and patience, we can have a home that looks like one of those featured in interior designing magazines.

Homes Sent by Our Readers: Private Residence in USA

We received these pictures not too long ago from Conor Musgave, one of our readers. This house is located in Port Madison Bay, Bainbridge Island, WA. We like the peace and comfort inspired by the exterior as well as its “green” location. But above all, we like to see homes with an impressive interior design sent by our readers. This particular residence can be characterized by airy arrangements and plenty of functionality. Large windows are present all around, increasing the feeling of space and allowing natural light to “flood” the rooms. There is a subtle use of color that manages to sensitize the whole place. More information on this home can be found on Bainbridge Island Coastal Living.
