Compared to a house, lighting places whose aim is to temporarily receive guests, such as hotels, spa, tourist centers, has several peculiarities. First of all we should think about the psychological impact of artificial light compared to natural light on people.

In a hotel during the day people are attracted by the interior design, by furnishings, shapes and colors. But at night the hotel has a second dimension, since the guest needs to stay in a safe, comfortable and protected atmosphere, but even relaxing, clean and efficient. It's clear that only artificial lighting can satisfy this mix of needs.

So the first thing to do is assure the highest comfort both to guests and to the staff. The hotel in fact is a place of work and as such it has to lighted, even if the lighting elements which assure a good view to the staff have to harmonize with the characteristics of a pleasant lighting for the hotel guests and have to be able to adequately vaporize the different areas.

A reception for example is a place that has to immediately draw the attention of the guest, as soon as he enter the hotel. Its lighting has to be at the same time attractive and impressive, with decorative elements that communicate the quality level of the services at disposal of the guest.

It's fundamental to have a good lighting of vertical surfaces and to limit horizontal lighting of working surfaces, in particular those of the reception. On the wall behind the concierge there should be much light since this is an element which draw the attention of the customer.

Design Undersea Hotel

Hilton has opened the world’s first undersea restaurant at the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa Rangali Island. The restaurant sits over 16 feet down in the Indian ocean and has 270-degree water views. The restaurant, Ithaa, uses curved acrylic to give diners the sensation of being surrounded by water. The restaurant can only seat 14 at a time and is reached by descending a spiral staircase. THe food is described as contemporary Maldive cuisine equal to restaurants in large cities but with schools of fish swimming over your head it might be easy to ignore the meal.

Today, The Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa Rangali Island, and to celebrate the anniversary the restaurant is offering guests the chance to not only eat under the sea but sleep under it as well. The 12-seat restaurant will be converted to a private bedroom suite for two, complete with private champagne dinner and breakfast in bed.

Ithaa sits five meters below the surface of the Indian Ocean, encased in plexiglass and reached by descending a spiral staircase. The restaurant offers breathtaking views and ‘fusion Maldivian cuisine’ (local cooking with a western twist), and rumor has it that over lunch the place is so bright that guests and staff have to wear sunglasses (they even keep spares on hand and offer a sunglasses cleaning service). Sounds wonderful, although I imagine seeing the sun rise while eating breakfast in bed is even better.

The fashion and hotel industry’s ongoing ‘love-in’ continues with the recent launch of Hotel Missoni on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh. The first of a proposed international chain for Missoni, the Italian fashion house famed for it’s colourful fabrics and knitwear.

Italian Luxury Hotel Interior DesignHotel Missoni, Edinburgh, is a visual onslaught of colour, vibrancy and retro chic that challenges the concept of tastefulness yet always manages to stay just on the right side of gaudy. Fine Italian food is available at the rather unimaginatively named ‘Cucina‘, whilst expensive cocktails are served and the even less imaginatively named, ‘Bar Missoni‘. Rather more imaginative however are the technology packed rooms with their signature Missoni zig-zags, stripes and bold colours and the modern, functional bathrooms with walk-in showers and predictably deluxe bathrobes.
